My advice would be …

Step 1: Get a SB3 (also called »Squeezebox Classic«), it’s great value
and allows to get started -now-.

Step 2: Start ripping lossless (and don’t buy lossy/DRM’ed stuff
anymore).

Step 3: Invest all the money you saved by not buying a Transporter in
either good (monitor) active speakers or a decent amp plus good
speakers.

Step 4: If you audibly enjoy the real great quality you now get (and
have new spare money), go buy a Transporter and you’ll step up even
more :-) You can always use the SB3 in another room (like I like to
listen in my bedroom, using SB3’s headphone out).
