I used to build audio output stages with discrete components. Most of it came down to finding matched pairs of transistors which was already hard in the 80's when I was at it and I wonder if you can buy them today. I sometimes went through a shop's complete stock, measuring each transistor hoping to find a good pair by chance. But it did sound much better in those days.
I think OP-AMP's must have improved so much in the last 30 years that the incentive of building discrete is much less than it used to be. I also think it's still possible and will probably sound better if done right... there's always a way. I looked at the site too and stuff like "custom build transformers" makes me itchy especially when looking at photo's showing a cheap standard transformer that I would only use for my door chime, if I had one. About capacitors on connectors: look inside professional marine radio's: they all have that, it's the only right way. Reviewers who don't like the sight of that are every designer's hell and nightmare. When you would leave the capacitor out and put it in a enclosed "special" cable's connectors, they would probably love it. cheers, Nick. -- DeVerm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DeVerm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18104 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56068 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
