Thanks for all your replies.
I've edited the first post as the Copland amp is the CSA29 not the 28 -
sorry for the c**k-up.

Answers to Phil's questions.
1) Yes, sibilance present at all volume levels.
2) No, not sure yet.
3) TP is now set to -10db - sibilance still present.
4) I've now got this remaster CD - flac'd and verified by accuraterip.
I've listened to this a couple of times. At high volumes it is
unbearable. Strangely, Kate's vocal on Don't Give UP is free from
sibilance while every time Peter puts his tongue on the roof of his
mouth to produce a sound, back comes the sibilance.
5) Tried rotel CDP, SB3 and PC via an Edirol UA25 DAC - all appear to
have similar brightness/sibilance.
6) The only other speakers I have are a little pair of Mission 750le's
and compared to the SFs sound very bright probably due to the lack of
low end. Sibilance on the otherhand seems less prominent but still
there.

Erik, I can borrow a full set of Yter cables from my dealer, I'll try
to get hold of them this week and report back, the Meridian CDP could
be a problem. I could get hold of a Leema Antila though, that is, if I
ask nicely enough ;-)

I've had friends round over Christmas and we had a couple of listening
tests I played a few tracks and asked them, without prompting, what
they thought of the sound. There were various coments from "wow" to
"how much". Two guys picked up on brightness one of whom found the
sibilance quite unbearable at high volumes. Interestingly these guys
also spend a little more than average on Hi-fi.

So, what's going on? Going back to Themis's comment in post 24 about
mid bass roll off and higher volume levels that over exaggerate upper
frequencies I thought I'd try and do some response tests of my own.
This plot uses a wav sine sweep through the TP captured in TrueRTA via
the Edirol UA25 and a Behringer ECM8000 with the microphone in my
listening possition at the top a an isosceles triangle as per the SF
manual. I'm no expert in these matters but I've tried to compensate
properly for the responses of the measuring equipment. What's not clear
to me is what this response really shows - an exagerated mid treble or a
bass suckout? Whichever, I'm sure this response is the cause of my
problems. What I do about it I'm sure yet, is it the room, speaker
placement or some electronic or mechanical failure - I obviously have
more tests to do.
