It doesn't.  Hence the dac sends a 48kHz clock to deal with the 96kHz
data, resulting in half-speed playback.  I had hoped that there was
some magic foo-foo dust in there that would handle it, but alas there
is not.

As for the clock issue, now that I have been able to convert the 24/96
to 24/48, I will be able to compare master/48 playback to slave/96
playback.  My prejudice is the opposite of yours...I think I'll be
better off with 48kHZ using the dac as master. But we'll see.
