HDMI does not require the use of HDCP, but it is part of the spec.

HDMI also has a built in control protocol, which could in theory let
you control your whole AV setup with a SqueezeBox Controller or the web
interface. It can also handle up to 8 channels of LPCM at 192/24. Is
there anything else in the consumer space that can do that?

That seems to me like a couple of very good reasons to seriously
consider HDMI.
