The reason for the result you got is that Audiodiffmaker is  correcting
for the difference in level ** by digitally attenuating the louder
control signal ** prior to making the comparison.

Hence both signals have suffered the same loss of SNR, they still match
to the same degree as they did before, even though you're not comparing
the same amount of information!

Now try placing a preamp after the DAC, and use that to correct the
level BEFORE recording to the PC. You will find that you lose exactly
the amount of signal as the amount of attenuation that was applied. 

There will also be a smidgeon for the noise floor of the preamp itself,
but this will be a fixed amount. If you want to compensate for that,
re-record your control signal with the preamp in the path and set to
-0db.
