A few years ago I decided to test digital cables on my Squeezebox. I wound up using a pretty good Audioquest Toslink (the one that's about $250)after A/B tests with the Kimber DV-60. That was with a Bel Canto DAC II. The optical cable was slightly more detailed and had slightly better air and imaging.
However, recently I switched to a PS Audio DAC and found the reverse. In neither case was there a huge difference. I think the bottom line is that a high quality cable is more important than whether optical or coax.
