In my case the DAC clearly has far lower levels of jitter (> 10x less)
using the Toslink input.  This *may* hold true for other DACs too.  I'd
recommend one to experiment with both inputs if they don't have the
means to measure jitter.

In summary (and to clarify my original statement), I can't say that the
Toslink output on the SB produces a cleaner signal than the S/PDIF
output, but in my case, the Toslink connection to my DAC produces vastly
superior sound.  It seems apparent that this is due to the reduced
levels of jitter.
