I suggest you reconsider. Cheap laptops (aka netbooks) don't have the power to do much. Mainline laptops will work, but are far more expensive than you need. You are much better serverd by a free or nearly free desktop as a server. Or a special "home theater computer", which are small and quiet. Folks who try to use laptops for their media server tend to complain a lot on the forums. You want a semi-real computer hard wired to your network for media. Audio is easier than video, but its best to be wired. You can use a laptop or netbook to control the media server, I have been doing that with my SqueezeBoxServer for five or six years.
