i'm a bit confused now, your point 2 should be:

2) wav vs flac via analogue = identical, unless clock drift (same as 2
different playback of the same wav file).

Is it correct?

What i'm not sure to understand is: If you think a block skema like
this one:

[1.ANALOG ORIGINAL] -> [2.AD CONVERSION] -> [3.CD PRODUCTION] -> [4.CD
RIPPING} -> [5. STORAGE ] -> [6.SBS + NET + SB DIG OUT] -> [7.DA
CONVERSION] -> [8.PLAYBACK] -> YOU.

The drift problem is caused by the different clocks in step 2 and step
6, correct? So is not practicaly possible to eliminate, i'm wrong?

Steps in between we assume are 'error free' or better errors are
eliminated in the digital domain (is quite a hard simplification, but
please forget it for a moment).

In our test we replaced step 8 with a new step 1 to step 6 short cicle,
with Your link you could eliminate the drift IN this cicle, so we Know
drift is the major (if not the only) cause of errors, just becose two
istance of this cicle provvide NULL differences, we can assume the
remaning kind of errors (if any) are at least systemic.

I'm wrong with this?

Now, if we compare the WAV file in storage (step 5) and the wav file
you recorded, the difference we are going to detect (if any) are due
only to the DA conversion (step 7) and the reverse AD conversion we
introduced, plus the Analog IN and OUT stage involved and cables,
cleaned by Clock Drift, rigth?

As stated before, those difference appear to be systemic.

For sure we could point those differences (or distortion) using better
quality gear, design or else as people do from the realy beginning, but
let's say they will always be in place in some measure, SB+ introduce
some changes over standard SB3, they claim to make better, other do the
same in other ways, maybe TP or Touch will be even better.

What I could not figure is how you could point to difference that are
'randomic' as Drift seems to be?

If - just for drift - i'm getting differences between 2 playback of the
same file (and that means, by the way, is the DA clock that is changing,
the one in the RECORDER AD is fixed once for ever!) the only think you
could do is Make better the DA Clock, but this will not eliminate the
problem, since also if error free, you never change the original in AD,
but at least we will measure a SYSTEMIC error!

Are Touch o TP getting better in this matter? How?

Thanks a lot.

Marco
