Agree with the chip thing - it was just an example.

As for isolation of grounds - this isn't necessarily a given with a
balanced connection. Hence the need for ground lift switches in some
equipment. I've had a lot of fun with balanced connections - I had over
180 of them in my studio. I especially enjoyed the moment when I
discovered one of my racks was floating at 100v over earth!

Ground isolation involves the PCB design and case earthing arrangements
at both ends too...
