Matt,

How I love the sound of endless chains of 5532/4 op amps, cheap and
nasty caps and resistors, not to mention miles of dubious cable... (or
worse!) :-)

I was a fully paid-up member (in every sense) of the "source first"
school in the 70's / 80's.

When I first heard an LP12 with a decent arm (one with good, taut
bearings that didn't ring like a bell) it blew me away. I had to have
one, no matter the cost. The only thing I'd heard that was preferable
was top-end reel-to-reel...
10 years after, the thrill had gone.

Slowly - very slowly - I began to isolate what I liked about the LP12
sound - and also why many people didn't like it so much.

Tonally it was all over the place. Dynamics/excitement were great. Linn
amps/speakers of the day were voiced around the rather odd midrange
presentation. As a system - WHEN TUNED TO PERFECTION - it sounded
great, especially with the Troika cartridge.

Of course it now transpires that there were great "transports" before
that - Garrard 301/401 for example - but they were badly compromised
by the arms/cartridges of the day.

I kept my LP12 until 1998 ( with various expensive upgrades along the
way ).

I wouldn't go back, but I do understand why folks still love and
cherish theirs.

There are about 30 albums in my collection where the best available
digital master can't touch the vinyl. Mostly these are ones where the
CD has never been remastered from the original 1st gen. tape, for
whatever reason.

As for the rest - I'm happy enough!
