I visited the Miller web site and have to confess I'm a bit confused by the Transporter vs dCS comparison.
The Transporter report from April 2007 measured 48/24 jitter at 64 different frequencies the left channel, 61 frequencies for the right (with different frequencies used in much of the range.) Only a few isolated, very precise frequencies showed an issue. The Transporter's 96/24 test used 49 frequencies for the left channel and 50 for the right, again with a frequency mismatch. In the vast majority of the range, the S/N ratio was 125 dB or better. Contrast that to the dCS report from December 2010. The 48/24 jitter was only measured at 3 frequencies. The 96/24 jitter was measured at only 1 frequency. The dCS test appears to suffer from the same issue you complained about with Stereophile's test. No wonder there was such a difference in the appearance in the graphs! Perhaps if the dCS were tested at 250 Hz instead....? Unfortunately the reports contained no details as to test setup and conditions. Nor was there any indication the manufacturer was contacted to see if there was an issue with the particular device tested. However, with the info presented, I don't see any way that one can compare the two - the dCS test appeared to have a substantially different basis than the one run for the Transporter. Absent further explanation I don't see a lot to talk about. One is also looking at numbers that are way down in the noise floor even if one takes things at face value. I thought we learned our lesson about mindlessly chasing specifications back in the 1970s with the distortion levels of amps. Lots of very impressive looking numbers were produced "back in the day" along with a number of very poor sounding amps. I don't own a Transporter, but did audition one a few years ago. I thought it sounded excellent. -- mlsstl ------------------------------------------------------------------------ mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84999 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
