That's not strictly true. There are examples of amp and speaker
manufacturers collaborating in this arena. The obvious one is Linn and
Naim: the PMS Isobarik was originally developed to be driven by three
NAP250s. Another example was Nytech and a speaker company that I think
was called ARC.

Of course, all of these setups using external general-purpose power
amps miss one of the big advantages of active: that the amps can be
tailored to the drive units and hence be much cheaper than using
generic amps that have to be able to drive passive speakers.
