Avoiding an "expensive mess" is the nightmare we are all trying to
avoid! 

Its curious to me that even the manufacturer may not have the crossover
points and slopes correct for the speakers they designed! - case in
point - the MMG's from Magneplanar had a 12uF cap and a 2.2mH inductor.
1st order crossover. Not sure why. Possibly for size, price and
resistance reasons. I replaced the cap with 20uF and the inductor with
a .75mH. Brought the pseudo ribbon crossover point down to about 2Khz
and increased bass response from the planar. Much better sound from the
"baby" planars. The point - much to be learned here. I'm not close to
being "done".
