I tried my best last night to discern differernces between the various filter settings. Using 24/96 tracks, the only differnces that I can even possibly claim to have heard was that filter #4 (linear phase apodising) was a bit over-boomy in the bass. Listening to classical music, #5 (minimum phase apodising) seemed to manifest a bit more detail.
With 16 or 24/44, on some tracks, the only definite difference (and this was the most obvious of all the comparisons we made) was I could clearly hear that filter #5 (minimum phase apodising) also seemed a bit brighter with more detail, but I'm not sure if it isn't a too bright. I've been keeping it on #2 (minimum phase soft-knee) for both 16/44 and 24/96 for the past week, but will listen for the next week or so on #5 and see if it gets tiring or not. I'm not much for the idea of jumping up and changing the filter settings each time I switch from 44 to 88 or 96 tracks, so would prefer to have one setting that we like for both. FWIW, neither me nor my wife could hear any differences between 1,2, and 3 in either 16/44 or 24/96. And, btw, this dac does wonders for Rhapsody, Pandora, sky.fm,etc. -- rgro Rick System information ------------------------ Main: PS Audio Quintet > Touch (wired) via spdif coax > Rega DAC > Marantz PM8003 > VA Mozart Grands > REL Acoustics R305.
