Phil, Many of the high resolution vinyl rips that you are speaking of are done for various different reasons such as: 1) The LP has not been released on CD 2) The vinyl is often some type of audiophile release, e.g. 180 gram, virgin vinyl, half speed mastered, etc. 3) In the case of case of a recording that is available on CD many times the ripper feels that due to the loudness war the vinyl often sounds better, with better dynamic range and much less compression.
