Replaygain would not fit my listening habits.  It would destroy the
loudness relationships between movements of a multi-movement work.

If I had a regular 2 V output DAC, I'd definitely use the attenuators. 
With the 1 V output, I occasionally find a recording at such a low RMS
level that I run out of volume with the attenuators in place.

I've hooked up my Bryston 3B-SST amp for now.  It allows switching
between 29 and 23 dB gain.  

All that said, what is the real problem with running at -25dB or more? 
It can't be S/N.  The noise from the DAC is simply never going to be an
issue.  So it must be some other digital bugaboo.
