I think that you gentlemen missed my point. It's not so much that
internet radio "sounds bad" but rather that it uses a format (lossy
compression) that is anathema to most of those golden eared audio
reviewers and YET they still listen to it all the while obsessing over
miniscule differences between pieces of equipment.

Darren - the type of compression you're referring to (dynamic range
compression) has been used by broadcaster for many years and stems from
the fact that dead air (silence) and very quiet musical passages mean
losing listeners so DR compression is applied to help ensure that the
quiet passages are loud enough to be hear in an automobile, among
various other reasons.
