Yeah we're in violent agreement from my POV too. I try to get the best format available when I buy music. Normally this works out at 16/44 - enough for me.
Having said that, I'm not sure I could tell 16/44 from Spotify Premium (320k Vorbis) blind and it's okay. Yes indeed, that's the way most radio stations think. But some stations have a lot less of it than others - that was my point. For example BBC Radio 3 plays a lot of classical which of course has a large dynamic range...with very little dynamic compression!
