It's for exactly this type of thing, plus the TT reasons, that
hardwiring/ethernet is really the better way to go.

To the op: there are literally volumes of "prose" written here with
regard to wi-fi issues.  There are a number of different parameters to
look at that could potentially be causing the Touch to not be able to
connect even though its receiver is on, but if you can avoid the whole
issue, why not eliminate that headache and just go ethernet?
