I'm kinda in a similar position to the OP (-ish). You can see my kit in
the sig below. I've always hankered after a Transporter - I just think
they look so cool -and -sound great (caveat - I've never actually heard
one) but I couldn't manage the price when my income took a hit at
retirement. However, used ones are now popping up now and then at more
reasonable prices. The TP was clearly a step up from the SB3, but will
my antiquated ears notice any improvements if I substitute a TP for the
Touch/DacMagic in my main system? The price of a used TP could bump my
DAC up a level I guess; I can see some of you suggesting that this is a
better route from an audio perspective. But the thought of that
beautiful casework, dual VFD displays ... sigh ...

It's a bit "classic kit" versus "2012" I guess; on another forum I was
looking for views on getting my relatively old but "classic"
olive-series Naim kit serviced versus replacing it with the latest
mid-range stuff, and the consensus was stick with the original stuff
because analogue technology hasn't moved on as much as digital.

So should I get an original Slim Devices TP (and try to ignore issues
about VFD spares etc.) or just upgrade my DAC? Or even just forget it
and get out more ... :-)

Thank you and good night.
