You bring up a good point. With all the focus these days on the Loudness
Wars and dynamic range compression things like how the original
recording was made are often overlooked. Many classic rock multi-track
recordings sound terrible because of the way they were originally
recorded. First the rhythm tracks, then the melody instruments and then
the vocals, all recorded separately and all recorded in sound booths -
no interaction between the musicians and very dry sound. No amount of
remastering magic is ever going to "fix" these sonic disasters.
