The upside is simple - the technology works, doesn't cost an arm and a
leg and doesn't take an act of Congress to make work. It is widely
accepted among audiophiles.

Automated system optimization facilities such as Audyssey, MCACC and
YPAO are built in to AVRs at all price levels above the most basic entry
point.

A beneficial result can be obtained with about 5 minutes of simple
methodical work.

What might the second box be?   A system always has to have speakers,
and these stand alone and are uninvolved with the system optimization
process, other than that they work pretty well.

I think the next step would be speakers and AVRs that are connected via
a digital link.
