One clarification is needed. There's a shared RO /var, but each machine
has it own RW layer. 

You can see our environment as one base server RO exporting its
own root to a set of machine. Each one of them has its own
RW layers. 

We introduced this model in our system in March 2007. It was working
well (besides some expected problems upgrading the base machine), but
some months ago we had a kernel+AUFS upgrade and then problems come out.

I think that we were using a CVS AUFS from november 2007. I don't
which changes in AUFS since them could cause these problems.
