...and every time I've come across the word it's had an e in it: byelaw.

Actually, a little light Googling shows most of the hits for "byelaw" being in 
the UK but most of the hits for "bylaw" being in Canada. So, I guess it 
depends which way you hang.

Aren't words wonderful things? ;-)
