Looks like things are just going to be more complicated!
Gliders are exempt from transponder/radio carriage in "G" & "E", but for
how long?

There's still seems to be a lot of subjective kneejerk reaction to a
perceived increase in risk due to the loss of Directed Traffic
Information (DTI). My own opinion of DTI is that it gave a nice warm
fuzzy feeling to pilots in light to moderate traffic but is/was useless
in heavy traffic because pilots can't get in on the radio and when they
do they're swamped with information overload. So what do they do? Slow
down and look out! So why not do this in the first place? And what about
our Wedgetail brothers? Ask the Dash 6 crew that nearly went down near
Broome after hitting one. It makes good operational sense to look out of
the cockpit whenever you can. You might see something that prevents you
having a scare.
In my view, there is no financially viable substitute in Australia to
"see and avoid" outside the major population centres, and it's about
time our friends in the RAAA accepted that. MMA/Ansett have operated RPT
turbo-props & jets for over 30 years outside controlled airspace in W.A.
without any fatalities, so what's new?
Regards,
John Welsh.
