Prior to the recent rewrite of the MOSP, Trial Instructional Flights were
defined as "primarily for the purpose of recruiting new members into the
sport". That definition implied there was an expectancy that the
"passenger" might take-up the sport - as opposed to merely undertaking a
pure 'joy flight'. The difference now is whether or not the "passenger" is
a member of the GFA (hence the requirement to complete the membership
forms). The current MOSP2 states:
16.4 Air operator certificates
An Air Operator Certificate (AOC) is necessary in order for a club to carry
out charter operations. A charter operation is defined as any operation
which carries passengers purely for hire and reward, without them becoming
GFA members.
17.1.2 Definition of Air Experience flight
An Air Experience flight is defined as carriage of a person who is a member
of the GFA (which may be short-term or introductory membership, as defined
from time to time by the GFA Council) for the purpose of experiencing the
sport of gliding.
I would suggest you have a read of the current MOSP 2 and GFA Ops Regs that
are available from the GFA website.

Subject: [aus-soaring] Joyflights/AEF's
On reading Daryl Connell's article in this months comic re passengers in
gliders, there seems to be little distinction between joyflights requiring a
charter rating & AOC, and an AEF requiring a AEI or higher, and no AOC.
The only difference I could ascertain was that joyflights had responded to
an advert in the press or by the side of the road.
Is this the only distinction between the two, ie the advert?
