I thought Mark had got good advice from the other respondents to his query.
While your response was relevant and correct it was also utterly useless
and ignored what has been happening for the last 20 years.
For the record here are my recommendations:
1. If the gel coat is cracked and needs removing - use Aussie gel coat to
refinish. There has been lots of experience with this over the last 15
years and the jobs that were done properly are holding up well.(no acetone
and minimum styrene monomer in the gel coat when spraying. Too much of
either and the gel coat goes brittle and mechanically cracks when cold or
flexed too much). Don't use more thickness than necessary.
2. Good gel coat that will crack if left alone(any vorgelat) or old
Schwabellack that has gone chalky or yellow:
Use 2 pack polyurethane. Use Aussie gel coat to fill any areas that won't
sand out.
3. Even good quality acylic laquer will work but isn't as robust and will
chip easier from rocks. Maybe OK for privately owned motorgliders operated
mainly from grass.
The GFA has plenty of advice on this subject but the main concern is with
not damaging the structure when removing old gelcoat and with getting the
mass balance of the control surfaces correct (even though they may not have
originally met the maintenance manual requirements when they left the
factory). I'm not aware that anyone has an STC for this type of refinishing
nor of CAR 35 approval.
