I consider this advice extremely sporty and incredibly gutsy for a service
agent to advise. 

I wouldn't do that in our workshop. I'd consider taking the EPROM out,
spraying IPA in the socket and on the EPROM pins and blowing dry with
compressed air and reassembling. If that didn't work I'd let the factory or
agent fix it so he could fix the problem and any screwups caused by trying
to fix the problem.
