I agree with actually but that isn't how our world works and it is time to
review the historical opposition to licences.
What is so different about not having a licence and being grounded by your
club because someone anonymously says they saw you do something?
$50 a year for a licence. The GFA fee is much more than that.
Does not having licences allow you to fly in controlled airspace? No, it
does not.
What a licence means is that at some time you at least passed a test for
issue of the licence along with usually some kind of written exam on the
basic rules of the activity.
Some people consider this a mark of achievement and families and friends of
pilots get some comfort from knowing their loved one was at least teated
for basic competence in the activity and may indeed feel more inclined to
go for a flight with them.
Don't forget also the tens of thousands of GA licence holders out there who
are quite comfortable with licences and are not all that happy without one.
A little less decaying hippy colony attitude and a bit more recognition of
the real world would do the GFA a lot of good.
