3G is indeed a CDMA system. WCDMA in fact & is totally different to GSM ( & CDMA ;-)
Not that it really matters much soon as the phones will be what is termed a "Software defined Radio" that is, as long as it can receive the particular band in use with sufficient bandwidth the whole modulation / protocol issue is sorted in real time in firmware & a reprogrammable gate array.
The end point being a phone that does the lot, makes it easier for manufacturers to cater to a diverse market.
