Reminds me of a story I read in S&G a few years ago. A glider pilot was getting low near Alconbury, and contacted the controller to ask permission to land there. The controller asked if he could hold, as there was a formation of F16's about to go. The glider pilot agreed, as he was not yet at circuit height, and off went the F16's will full afterburner. The glider pilot then lined up on the runway, and to his delight found the heat from the afterburners had generated a booming thermal, which enabled him to climb to sufficient height to make it home.
