There appears to be some question as to the approval of the fast find >From the website:
Quote Description: McMurdo Fastfind 211 PLB is the smallest, waterproof and versatile Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) on the market today. McMurdo Fastfind 211 PLB has a 50 channel integral GPS providing greater position accuracy so that you can be found faster, combined with a 406MHz transmitter & 121.5 homing signal. Note: A PLB is not a substitute for a 406MHz Marine EPIRB. Where Australian & International Law require a 406MHz EPIRB to be carried, this product does not meet these requirements Unquote The GME410 product is a fully approved EPIRB John Parncutt -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Stuart & Kerri Ferguson Sent: Wednesday, 11 November 2009 9:54 PM To: 'Discussion of issues relating to Soaring in Australia.' Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] personal locator beacons Mike, I agree if size and weight is an issue the Fastfind 211 is the way to go - the penalty with the Fastfind is a 5 year approved battery life V a 7 years with the GME410 product. As most of you know I am one of the people on the other end of these things when they are activated; to date I have not been involved with a Fastfind 211 activation, they are relatively new on the market. However I have coordinated several responses to GME410G activations and in every case I have dealt with they have performed well. The reality is that they all should work well if deployed correctly, they all have to meet very high standards to get through the approval process. I've dealt with GME. Not impressed.
