John,
Not correct - the GME MT410 series is a PLB and is not a substitute for
an EPIRB where an EPIRB is required - check you state boating laws for EPIRB
requirements - each state is different.
However CAR 252A does allow you to carry an EPIRB in your aircraft to meet
the requirements provided it meets the Australian Standards and is
Registered - you can thank Bill Hamilton when he was President of the AOPA
for that - Australia is one of the few countries in the world that allow
that flexibility :)

Stuart,
I think you mean PLB or EPRIB.
Yes that was a great win for Australian pilots by AOPA however I
think Bill Hamilton was working the airspace issue at the time.
The bloke who did the politicking, schmoozed the pollies and called
the dishonest public servants on their outright lies on the ELT issue
was Boyd Munro.
The Senate enquiry was quite embarrassing for one of them as he had a
list of 40 instances where he claimed a fixed ELT in the aircraft may
have saved lives. Boyd investigated every one of those incidents and
in all but one or two cases with these incidents/accidents the fixed
ELT would have been useless if fitted. The aircraft's position was
either well known already or it burned or went into the water, turned
upside down so the ELT wouldn't have worked etc. There were one or
two cases where people died who may have been rescued if they had had
personal PLB's as they escaped the burning wreckage to die of
exposure and or injuries as the ELT didn't work.
There was however one accident Boyd couldn't find any details of.
When asked during the Senate enquiry the public servant with the list
had to admit that the missing aircraft was a BOAT.
Credit where it is due. Thanks, Boyd Munro.
The fixed ELT issue began because in about 1970 a congressman went
missing in a light aircraft and they didn't find the wreck or the
body for about 3 years. So fixed ELT's with automatic activation were mandated.
Very expensive, spare politicians are much cheaper and easily replaceable.
