Maybe you could have it both ways, have your cake etc.
At a glance it would appear that in NZ they glide under the same system as 
ours, but you can get a "proper" CAANZ licence too.

  If glider pilots want their license to be recognized internationally, they 
have to be prepared to undergo the yearly medicals ( over 40)  at a cost of 
probably $300  in a licensed clinic.Not just your GP. ( anyway that's the way 
it is in Europe) It is a very thorough medical with a large number of older 
pilots failing.  
  If you want to fly in Europe , France is the best place. Nicest to fly and 
relatively easy for UK and Aussie pilots. I know of 2 airfields that help the 
most, Serres with Klaus Ollman and Sisteron-Vaumeilh.
