Whoever you are "mart", nice attempt at misdirection.

ICAO licence standards vary around the world for all sorts of licences but for short term visits they are usually recognised with some limitations or hoops to jump through.

The US private certificate for gliders does not require a medical beyond a self declaration. If we're going to have a licence there's no reason for that not to be the model instead of the Euroloonie one.

Many of the people who want to fly overseas already have Australian licences that allow them to fly anything up to and including Boeing 747 on recognition of their Australian licence but have difficulty being allowed to fly gliders overseas because they cannot get a CASA issued glider pilot licence. These people already have the medical etc as does any private pilot.

Morgan: perhaps there are reasons for the questions on the US private certificate written: 1. Maybe they are trying to turn out AIRMEN instead of just people who can manipulate the controls of a glider and this is helped by knowing how the rest of the system works. 2. As a glider pilot you can, with a briefing, convert to motorgliders and then get in a Super Dimona and fly it into the airspace around LA International if the aircraft is suitably equipped.

So maybe this once the government bureaucracy has got it right.

As for this "I believe only a small proportion of Australian glider pilots will ever want to fly a glider solo in another country. Possibly 10 times this number will fly gliders overseas but under instruction or with a locally-licensed friend. If they had an ICAO licence as a matter of course, then these proportions would change, but not by much. Going the other way, I have a friend visiting me from the United States soon. He doesn't expect to fly solo and will be quite happy to take the (legal) back seat in my Duo."

Breathtaking FU I'm all right Jack.

It sure will be small proportion if the lack of an ICAO licence makes the process very difficult.

BTW better check if you can take your friend cross country legally in the Duo. Last time I looked you couldn't do that.

For the record the CASA RPPL and (PPL etc licence) was to be OPTIONAL . Pilots who were happy to operate under the existing sport aviation organisations could continue to do so. Which makes the sabotage of the proposal by Hall, Meertens and Middleton even more outrageous. It wasn't even any of their business. If this caused some bureaucratic difficluty for the organisations for those who had taken up the option but remained members of the organisation all I can say is GOOD.

If glider pilots want their license to be recognized internationally, they have to be prepared to undergo the yearly medicals ( over 40) at a cost of probably $300 in a licensed clinic. Not just your GP. ( anyway that's the way it is in Europe) It is a very thorough medical with a large number of older pilots failing. If you want to fly in Europe , France is the best place. Nicest to fly and relatively easy for UK and Aussie pilots. I know of 2 airfields that help the most, Serres with Klaus Ollman and Sisteron-Vaumeilh.

European glider pilots would love to have to ozzie way license instead of vast amounts of red tape. For the few pilots that go overseas ( like me) it will be easier but I think the GFA should think twice, or rather 10 times before going to that system.
