It's 2011 - this the future:

I know these gadgets are just in the development stages - but so has everything else been before it's been accepted by skeptics. Display everything: 3D Flarm, 3D airspace, 3D beercans, last thermal markers, landable fields and so on... You won't even want to take your eyes away from what's around you. Smart interfaces would limit the information to only the most needed information: What would I need airspeed indication for if I am flying at the correct speed? Best heightband only get's displayed if I am getting close to the lower / upper margins...

I think you will find that first one was an April 1 2009 article. The metal contacts harnessing the electrical impulses from your brain is the giveaway.

However there are similar devices available that project on to your retina or a small mirror in front of and below your glasses. These are in military use (helmet mounted displays and sights - the F 35 doesn't have a HUD, its in the helmet) and more than 10 years ago I thought that most notebook computer displays etc would be replaced by them. I don't know what the issues were with the very small LCD displays (1/4" across full VGA) that caused this not to happen. The second link mentions the Kopin company which did make such devices. There are commercial displays available too although the point of focus is usually closer than infinity.

If done right for aviation use the image will appear to be 6 meters away, effectively at infinity as far as your eye focus is concerned.

It might also be an idea to have a think about what information you really need for the task at hand in order to make decisions. I'm amused when I hear people say they turn off most of the possible information on their PDA's etc in order to de clutter the display and that the "colour" display is vague pastel shades. Still they miss turning in the AAT areas.

Of course we already have head up displays in gliders - we have the audio vario, voice prompts and warnings and that wonderful 3D moving map that is cunningly projected onto the inside of the canopy (it even shows clouds, birds and other gliders!)
