Slow down and take a closer look: HUD is not FPV. Mike is on the right
track...
The link I supplied are for HUD glasses - you can still see what's going on
behind them. They let you "super impose" all data needed just like in
military applications.
Ideal for use in soaring - you never have to take your gaze away from the
outside - no need to look inside the cockpit as often as we have to now. 6m
plus distance is achieved by focus.
F-104's (Starfighters) fell out of the sky (amongst other reasons) because
of a human limitation discussed in human performance: look down to the
right, bank the aircraft left (base leg). look up - and you are disoriented
- crash... Not that we crash as glider pilots - but it would break your
concentration if you are thermalling left and look down on your pda or map
on your right leg...
With HUD sunnies you don't have to look inside the cockpit as often. PDA
info is on the display, map info is on the display (not as map - but as
pointers). Ideal for soaring flight in gliders. See and avoid! Just use any
pda with vga/hdmi out. Apple didn't think of that on the iPad - not even a
bluetooth mouse...

FPV (First Person View) uses goggles that are basically two mini monitors -
you can not see what's behind them. They are not transparent. In FPV
applications you don't have to see what's behind the glasses. It's a totally
different application compared to actually sitting in a flying machine. You
could use any laptop / monitor instead. The glasses combined into ski
goggles cut out sun glare.
It's great fun but: http://vimeo.com/19690025
You can go places in ways that you would not even think of in a real
machine: http://vimeo.com/17351140
FPV has got it's uses as well (not just for the fun-factor):
