Shipping USA to Aus you will likely use an American freight forwarding 
company, whether it's organised through a local contact like Gary Brasher or 
not.

My last experience with rates was that the price fluctuates with demand. Allow 
for a large window of time and the actual cost to ship can be almost cut in 
half. There's no cutting port fees and taxes.
I think that if you use a standard 40' container, not a high cube, the 
availability is better.

Be ready to deliver to the port (probably Long Beach or Oakland) when you 
finally get the sailing date.
  Its not easy to get two trailers in a container. Involves removing axles.
