There's an odd attitude amongst comp pilots that the only real gliding
is done in comps. In fact, some of us who don't fly comps are regarded
as "dilettantes" even though we may fly thousands of kilometres across
the country.

This is a little like "elite athletes". I'm not sure what an elite
athlete is but they moan like mad about being charged the same fees as
we do to use facilities like training grounds and swimming pools.
Surely elite athletes are just professional or semi professionals and
treating the sport as a business and they should get the same
sponsorship as business people and professionals anywhere which is
normally bugger-all.

Anyway, I digress. How many GFA members fly comps? I thought it was
less than 20%. Most of these pilots fly as many comps as they can get
to and the ones I have seen don't need much in the way of sponsorship.

I think the GFA would be better off spending our money on encouraging
juniors, training and keeping the skies free for the rest of us
dilettantes to fly in.
