Hi Mark,
for trouble shooting:
use your hand held airband radio in the car. You don't even have to
transmit.
Dial in a frequency and reduce the squelch until you get the static / noise.
Take the radio a short distance (1-2m) away and see if the noise still
exists.
There are a lot of cheap mobile device chargers out there. A cheap mobile
charger or GPS power supply converter (example 12V to 5V) can create a lot
of RF noise if it is poorly designed (skimped on caps..).
Sometimes (sometimes!) it is possible to reduce the RF noise to acceptable
levels by using Ferrite Cores on the power-out side of the charger (install
ferrite core between charger and phone / gps)
