Having spent a very large part of my career commercialising research work (including my current employer commercialising CSIRO research), I'm very, very sceptical of that statement. Very rarely does doctoral dissertations actually end up in production systems. It may be the basis that it came from, but by the time the real world gets involved, the original research ends up as a dusty bit of paper on the shelf.
