I agree with Mike.  In 2015 is a compass necessary?  It probably was in 2015 BC 
and has probably been mandated ever since.  It is on the minimum equipment list 
for most (all?) aircraft and that needs to be challenged. Why mandate?  If you 
or your company wants one OK, but don't mandate it for all.  

I am quite happy gliding without a compass (visible). In Eastern Australia half 
the fence lines are N/S plus or minus the deviation and that will do me.

I expect we are blindly following some ICAO dictate and getting ICAO to delete 
the requirement is the challenge I suggest.

More 'nanny state' rulings when common sense should decide.  That's uncommon I 
know.
