>>InReach are the better solution for those instances? Well yes. The InReach uses a satellite entirely. Not mobile phone coverage. The SMS is sent to someone else's mobile via satellite so if they have no reception, they cannot receive the message but anyone else with reception can. Or anyone else with an InReach.
The only use a of mobile with an InReach is to control the InReach via Bluetooth and see what's going on. You can do this entirely on the InReach screen but it is tiny and there are only a few buttons. With the InReach alone, you cannot see tracking progress. You can check to see if tracking points have been sent and how many. If they're not being sent, they're not being received. So in your situation, assuming that someone had mobile reception and you were somewhere within Iridium coverage, which should include the whole planet, then you would be able to send an receive sms messages just as if you had coverage.
