The relevant etherpad does still exist, but as far as I can see doesn't provide an answer to why this was added. It has a list of issues to address, which includes: * DONE should we add "unquoted" to "ends in a <blank>" so that it becomes "ends in an unquoted <blank> (after substitution)"?
