We have had a very collaborative way to work until now, so keeping track of who is modifying what in the officially released version has never occured to us as being a necessity.

I understand that can be a significant burden. That's why it's important to pick a license that won't make your life difficult down the road. At the OpenDocument Fellowship (another project I'm involved in) we use the CC Attribution ShareAlike version 2.5. The 2.5 version has a neat feature, that you can designate a third party to receive attribution. So if everyone agrees on the same third party, it makes attributin really easy. In our case, we designate the fellowship itself. So you can grab anything from the website, and say "by the OD Fellowship" instead of having to track down authors.

Cheers,
Daniel.
