It's happened to me many a time.  In a public lab, things like floppy
drives can get trashed pretty easily, so you ask the person at the
console to insert the floppy, they look at you strange, you go back to
your station and copy your files, type 'eject floppy' (solaris), wander
back over, thank them and take the disk.

And I don't understand how you can determine 'console'.  All my linux
boxes have 6 consoles, and there are often a few different users on each
of them.
