OK,
thanks, I figured as much, just curious as to the reason. BTW the 
example was JTAG programming and not PDI (maybe I labeled it incorrectly 
in my original mail). For reference I have attached a dump of a run 
attempting to start avarice as a debugger front-end, but in PDI mode. 
Here the response seems to be A0.
WRT the programming, consider it dropped, I'll stick to AvrDude for that.
