Well, AVaRICE has to be built using Cygwin on Windows, so maybe there's an issue with Cygwin and libhidapi then? If you go to the libhidapi home page: http://www.signal11.us/oss/hidapi/ there's a short example program. Drop the second part (starting at "handle = hid_open(..."), the initial part will tell you all HIDs the library could find. Build that example under Cygwin, and run it.
